Paul Smith- First Team Manager

'Smudger' took over in September 1997 after Jimmy Thompson's reign of terror. He immediately appointed ex-Dundee United defender John Clark as his assistant.

Paul's playing career took him to Raith, Falkirk and Dundee Ayr- to name but a few. He was at Brockville for a number of years where he enjoyed success at the highest level.

As a manager Paul has had mixed success. His first season in charge was a 'build for next season' kind of period. In season 1998/9 the side finished mid table and the pressure mounted despite only losing on to one team away from home. Summer 1999 saw the arrival of top players such as Anthony from Celtic and Ritchie from Clydebank. Despite having arguably the best squad in the division, Berwick have been less than convincing at times during the season and many fans have called for his head. But nine months later he led Berwick to promotion and he has since gradually earned the respect of the Berwick fans.

In December 2000 he was awarded a new 3 year extension on his current contract, keeping him at the club until November 2003.
